The 10 best YouTube niches to start in 2026 (backed by real data)

We looked at every long-form video small English channels (1k–100k subscribers) posted in the last 90 days. Here are the 10 niches where newcomers break through most often, how much they pay, and the formats that work.

Niches

"Best niche" lists usually rank topics by how much the biggest channels earn. That's useless when you're starting: what matters is whether a channel with 5,000 subscribers can still get pushed by YouTube.

So we ran the numbers on Returbe's index instead. For every long-form video published in the last 90 days by an English-language channel between 1,000 and 100,000 subscribers, we counted how often a video got at least 3x its channel's usual views (an "outlier"), how many different channels managed it, and the estimated ad revenue per 1,000 views (RPM).

The order balances three things: how often small channels break out, how many different channels do it (so it's a niche, not one lucky creator), and how much a view pays. RPMs are Returbe's estimates for English audiences, not guarantees.

1. True crime & mysteries

The best niche for newcomers right now, and not close. Small true-crime channels have the highest median views of the whole list (14.6k), 36 of the 116 we tracked are less than a year old, and the RPM is solid because the audience is adult and American.

Real example: Parke Jones (8.5k subscribers) got 345k views on "Everest College: The Rise & Fall of a For Profit College", 214x his usual.

Formats that work: the rise and fall of a company, bodycam breakdowns, "What really happened…", internet icebergs, unsolved cases.

2. History & documentary

Fewer channels than true crime, but a high hit rate and a better RPM ($5.24). Viewers watch 20–40 minutes, which means many mid-roll ads. Unspoken Stories (93k) got 330k views on a single combat interview from Fallujah.

Formats that work: veteran interviews, "the forgotten…", one battle or one dynasty explained in depth, maps and timelines.

3. Tech & AI

55 different small channels had a 3x hit in 90 days, with a $6.42 RPM. Median views are low (2.1k): tech is a niche where a few videos carry the channel, usually tutorials that rank in search for months. Even a C++ deep dive ("C++ IO URING: Part 2", Stephen Blum, 18k subscribers) passed 78k views.

Formats that work: "I tested X so you don't have to", tool comparisons, build-along tutorials, AI news explained for non-developers.

4. Business & making money online

The highest RPM after finance ($9.54), and advertisers love it. Careful: this niche is full of fake gurus, and viewers can smell it. What breaks out is proof: case studies, real numbers, "I tried it for 30 days".

Formats that work: case studies, "how X makes money", side hustle experiments with receipts.

5. Personal finance

The best-paying niche in our data ($12.53 RPM), but the hardest to break into: only 8 small channels had an outlier in 90 days. Pick it if you have real expertise and patience; a 10k-view video here can earn as much as a 50k-view gaming video.

Example: J.R. Academy (16k) got 259k views on "Buy These 5 Things in Silence…", 24x its usual.

6. Stories & narration

The easiest niche to produce: no camera, no travel, just a script and a voice. Reddit stories, dark web stories and first-person dramas keep getting pushed: Diary of Naomi (6.8k subscribers) hit 218k views (126x), DarKer (8.3k) hit 339k with "Deleted Dark Web Reddit Stories".

The catch: a low RPM ($2.91), and YouTube is cracking down on mass-produced AI channels. Write your own stories and voice them yourself.

7. Film, TV & anime video essays

The largest number of small channels breaking out (130 in 90 days). Audiences love analysis, rankings and "why this ending works". Avoid re-uploading clips: those channels get views, but no monetization and copyright strikes. Essays with commentary are what's safe.

8. DIY, home & builds

Fewer creators, high median views (6.1k) and a $5.40 RPM, plus easy sponsors (tools, materials). Transformation stories do best: "He had been sleeping in an abandoned barn… so I turned it into his dream home" (Volcanic Buildx, 56k subscribers) passed 1.9M views.

9. Self-improvement

Saturated at the top, but small channels with a personal angle still break out. Young James (9.8k) got 437k views, 337x his usual, with "7 years of self improvement lessons in 4 min (no cold shower bs)". The lesson is in the title: take a stand against the clichés of the niche.

10. Gaming (lore, retro & icebergs)

The most competitive niche on YouTube, and the lowest RPM of the list ($2.38). It's here because the volume is enormous: 169 small channels had an outlier in 90 days. Don't do let's plays. Do lore, history and icebergs of a game: "The Super Mario 64 Iceberg: Six Years Later…" (NEScRETRO, 63k) is the kind of video that keeps getting views for years.

The pattern behind the list

Look at the winners again: icebergs, "rise and fall", "what really happened", deep dives. Across niches, the formats travel better than the topics. Returbe's Trending formats page tracks these title structures across the whole index: "the Most Disturbing Internet [X] Iceberg" shows up on 4 different channels, one of them at 72x.

Pick the niche with your head, then the format with the data. Choose 2 or 3 niches from this list you could make 30 videos in, then open the Niche Finder and look at which small channels are breaking out in them this week.

How to use this list

  1. Shortlist 2 niches you could genuinely keep going in for a year.
  2. In Top videos, filter on each niche and on long-form, and look at the outliers from small channels.
  3. Write down the 3 formats that keep coming back.
  4. Make 5 videos on the most promising one, then compare each to your channel's average.
