On Shorts, channel size barely matters. The feed tests every Short with new viewers, which is why a channel with 1,600 subscribers can wake up to 4 million views. But it doesn't happen equally in every niche.
We looked at nearly 40,000 Shorts published in the last 90 days by English-language channels between 1,000 and 200,000 subscribers in Returbe's index. For each niche we counted how many of those channels got a Short at 5x or more of their usual views, the median views, and how many Shorts passed 1 million views.

Two things jump out. Film, TV & anime produced the most million-view Shorts (511). And finance and business Shorts barely get views from small channels: those topics belong in long videos.
The 10 best Shorts niches, with real viral Shorts
1. Gaming
The most small channels breaking out (160). Fails, glitches, "how NOT toβ¦" and hidden details win.
Proof: GripItByTheHusk (16.9k subscribers), "How NOT to Jailbreak your PS5": 5.4M views, 1,079x its normal.
2. Sports
342 Shorts over a million views. Funny moments and reactions travel better than highlights (which also bring copyright claims).
Proof: HiddenDepths (19.3k subscribers), "Bro Ran Too Fast π": 45.9M views, 701x its normal.
3. Film, TV & anime
The most million-view Shorts of any niche. One great scene, one fact nobody noticed, one question to the viewer.
Proof: Quick Dose (41.1k subscribers), a superhero Short titled "What do you think?": 14.5M views, 705x.
4. Comedy & "ranking" memes

Proof: John Ranking (31k subscribers), "Top 5 Funniest Dog moments": 17.5M views, 1,311x.

What viral Shorts have in common
Across niches, the Shorts above share the same mechanics:
- The hook is visual, not verbal. A broken room, a dog mid-fall, a car in the air: the viewer understands in under a second.
- A countdown or a payoff. "Ranking", "Top 5", before/after: the viewer stays to see the end.
- Titles are short and conversational ("Bro Ran Too Fast π", "What do you think?"). The title barely matters on the feed; it matters for comments.
- No intro, no logo, no "hey guys". The first frame is already the content.
Shorts make views, long videos make money
Shorts pay roughly $0.03 to $0.10 per 1,000 views. The 17.7M-view "ranking" Short above earned somewhere around $500 to $1,800. A long true crime video earns that with 100,000 to 350,000 views. The best strategy for most channels: grow with Shorts, earn with long videos on the same topic. Our guide to the highest paying YouTube niches shows what a typical long video earns in each niche.
How to find your Shorts format in 20 minutes
- Pick a niche from the table above.
- On Returbe, open Top Videos, switch to Shorts, filter on the niche and on channels under 50k subscribers, last 30 days.

Methodology
Returbe's index on October 29, 2026: Shorts published in the last 90 days by English-language channels with 1,000 to 200,000 subscribers, excluding low-CPM markets and made-for-kids videos. A breakout is a Short at 5x or more of its channel's median views. Examples were checked by hand; Shorts that looked sponsored or like ads were left out.
FAQ
What is the best niche for YouTube Shorts in 2026?
Gaming, sports and film/TV/anime have the most small channels breaking out on Shorts in our data: 160, 107 and 98 channels under 200,000 subscribers had a Short at 5x or more of their usual views in 90 days. For views per Short, animals, ASMR/satisfying and comedy have the highest median views.
How much do YouTube Shorts pay per 1,000 views?
Roughly $0.03 to $0.10 per 1,000 views, in almost every niche, because Shorts are paid from a shared pool. A Short with 1 million views typically earns $30 to $100. Shorts are best used to grow a channel and sell something else (long videos, products, sponsors).
Can a new channel go viral on YouTube Shorts?
Yes, more easily than with long videos. In our data, channels with 1,600 to 30,000 subscribers regularly get Shorts with 4 to 17 million views, hundreds of times their usual views. The feed tests every Short with new viewers, so the channel's size matters less than the first 2 seconds.
Which Shorts niches should I avoid?
Finance, business and news Shorts have very low median views for small channels in our data (under 3,000), with almost no Shorts passing a million views. These topics work better as long videos, where they also pay 100 times more per view.
