Highest paying YouTube niches in 2026: RPM by niche, and what a small channel actually earns

RPM for 27 YouTube niches in 2026, plus a number nobody else shows: what a typical video from a small channel earns in each niche once you factor in real views. Finance pays the most per view; true crime pays the most per video.

Search "highest paying YouTube niches" and you'll find the same list everywhere: finance, insurance, software, with CPMs of $30, $50, sometimes $100. Two problems. CPM isn't what you earn (RPM is). And a niche that pays $30 per 1,000 views is worthless to you if your videos get 300 views.

So this guide gives you both numbers. First, Returbe's RPM estimates for 27 niches. Then the number that actually decides your income as a small channel: what a typical video earns, using the real median views of 2,000+ English channels between 1,000 and 100,000 subscribers over the last 90 days.

RPM by niche: the full table

RPM = what the creator earns per 1,000 long-form views, after YouTube's share, for an English-speaking, US-weighted audience.

Why finance pays so much: advertisers there sell credit cards, brokers and insurance, where one customer is worth hundreds of dollars. Kids content pays the least because YouTube doesn't allow personalized ads on made-for-kids videos.

The number that matters: earnings per typical video

Now the twist. We took the median views of a long-form video from small English channels (1k to 100k subscribers) in each niche over the last 90 days, and multiplied by the typical RPM.

Finance falls from #1 to #5. A typical small finance video gets 2,700 views; a typical true crime video gets 15,800. True crime pays about a third as much per view, and earns twice as much per video.

The 8 best niches for money, ranked for a new channel

Combining both tables (pay per view, typical views, and how often small channels break out), here's where we'd start if the goal is income.

1. True crime & mysteries

The best money-per-effort in our data: high median views, a $5 RPM, long watch times (30 to 60 minutes, so more mid-roll ads) and the highest share of small channels breaking out. Read our beginner niches guide for real examples.

2. History & documentary

44% of small channels had a 3x video, videos run long, and they keep earning for years. Company rise-and-fall stories are the most explosive sub-genre: 69% of the small channels we track there had an outlier.

3. DIY, home & crafts

An underrated combination: $6.50 RPM, 8,600 median views, and advertisers selling tools and home products. Renovation transformations also explode on Shorts.

4. Finance & investing

The highest RPM, worth it if you have real expertise. Narrow down: one market, one type of investor, one country. Investing and real estate content can reach $20 to $30 RPM.

5. Cars & vehicles

$7 RPM, 38% of small channels breaking out, and a passionate audience. Buying guides, ownership costs and "why X failed" stories do well.

6. Business & e-commerce

$11 RPM. Case studies with real numbers beat motivation. Small channels documenting their own business ("I started a SaaS in 7 days") break out regularly.

7. Tech & AI

$8 RPM and 40% of small channels hitting 3x, but low median views: tech is a niche where a few tutorials carry the channel through search.

8. Self-improvement & philosophy

$6 RPM, saturated with generic motivation. Specific angles (stoicism applied to work, science-based habits) still break out.

How to raise your RPM in any niche

  • Make videos over 8 minutes so you can place mid-roll ads. Most of the top-earning niches above have median durations of 20 minutes or more.
  • Target an English, US-heavy audience if you can: the same video earns about 40% less with a French audience and 65% less with a Spanish one.
  • Pick advertiser-friendly topics. Violence, swearing and tragedy can limit ads. True crime works because it's told like a documentary, not gore.
  • Publish in Q4. Advertisers spend the most from October to December, so RPMs are usually at their highest of the year.
  • Add a second income. Affiliate links, sponsors and your own products often earn more than AdSense, especially in finance, tech and business.

Long videos vs Shorts

Shorts pay from a shared pool: roughly $0.03 to $0.10 per 1,000 views in every niche. A Short with 1 million views earns about what a long video with 10,000 views earns in true crime. Use Shorts to grow, long videos to earn. If you want to grow with Shorts, see the best YouTube Shorts niches.

Methodology

RPM ranges are Returbe's benchmarks per niche for a US-weighted English audience; they are estimates, not observed earnings. Median views come from Returbe's index on October 29, 2026: English-language channels with 1,000 to 100,000 subscribers, excluding low-CPM markets, long-form videos over 3 minutes published in the last 90 days. "Small channels with a 3x hit" is the share of those channels with at least one video at 3x their median views.

FAQ

What is the highest paying YouTube niche in 2026?

Per view, finance and investing pays the most: around $14 per 1,000 views on average for an English audience, up to $30 for investing and real estate content. Business and e-commerce (about $11) and tech, AI and YouTube growth (about $8) follow.

What is the difference between CPM and RPM on YouTube?

CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube's cut. RPM is what the creator actually earns per 1,000 views, after YouTube's 45% share and counting views that showed no ad. RPM is the number to use to estimate your income.

Which YouTube niche earns the most for a small channel?

In our data, true crime and beauty earn the most per typical video for channels under 100,000 subscribers (around $75 to $80 per video), because their median video gets 15,000 views or more. Finance pays three times more per view, but a typical small finance video gets 2,700 views, so it earns about half as much.

Do YouTube Shorts pay as much as long videos?

No. Shorts are paid from a shared pool and earn roughly $0.03 to $0.10 per 1,000 views in every niche, 50 to 100 times less than a long-form video. Shorts are great to grow, but long-form videos are where the ad money is.

Does the audience's country change RPM?

A lot. The same video earns most with a US, UK, Canadian or Australian audience. Returbe's benchmarks put German-speaking audiences at about 85% of the English RPM, French at about 60%, and Spanish or Portuguese at 30 to 35%.
