vidIQ vs Returbe (2026): which YouTube tool actually finds ideas that work?

vidIQ vs Returbe compared side by side: prices, free plans, outliers, niche research, keywords and AI tools, with screenshots of both. Who should pick which, and when to use both.

Logan Veny

Founder of Returbe

vidIQ is the best-known YouTube tool in the world: 30M+ creators, an extension installed on millions of browsers, and an AI coach that will happily rewrite your titles. Returbe is newer and narrower: it does one thing, finding the videos that blow up compared to their channel's normal, and builds niche research, title formats and channel tracking on top of it.

So which one should you pay for? We make Returbe, so take this with the right amount of salt, but we tried to be fair: every vidIQ price and feature below comes from vidIQ's own public pages as of October 2026, with screenshots, and we say clearly where vidIQ is the better pick.

The short answer. Pick vidIQ if your bottleneck is SEO, keywords and AI writing help for each upload. Pick Returbe if your bottleneck is what to make next: finding a niche, a proven format, and the small channels in your space that are exploding right now. Serious creators often use both.

What vidIQ does best

vidIQ started as a Chrome extension that showed tags and SEO scores next to YouTube videos. In 2026 it's a full creator suite: keyword research, an AI Coach trained on your channel, a thumbnail maker, title and description generators, a script writer, video clipping for Shorts, "best time to post", competitor tracking, and paid 1-on-1 coaching on top.

vidIQ's plans (October 2026): Free, Boost and MAX, each with a monthly allowance of AI credits.

Its strongest tool is still keyword research. Type a topic and you get search volume, competition and an overall score, plus matching terms and the questions people type. For a video that lives off search ("how to…", tutorials, product reviews), that's exactly what you need.

Where vidIQ is weaker: most of its "idea" features start from a keyword you already have, and a lot of the value is now behind AI credits, which you spend on generations. If you don't know what to make yet, a keyword box is a hard place to start.

What Returbe does best

Returbe tracks thousands of YouTube channels around the clock (about 9,800 at the time of writing, with more than 70,000 new videos analyzed every week) and compares every video with its own channel's median views. A video at 10x is doing ten times what that channel usually does: that's an outlier, and it's the clearest signal there is that a topic, a title or a thumbnail hit a nerve. (If the idea is new to you, read what an outlier video is.)

Returbe homepage: the videos that blow up, spotted before everyone else, with outlier multipliers on each thumbnail
Returbe ranks videos by how far they beat their channel's normal, not by raw views.

Because the index is always running, you don't need a keyword to start. You open Top Videos, pick a niche, long-form or Shorts, a channel size and a period, and you see what is overperforming right now.

Top Videos filtered on True Crime: an 8.5k-subscriber channel at 214x its normal.

Where Returbe is weaker: it isn't an SEO tool. You won't get tag suggestions or a description generator, and its AI tools are a much smaller set than vidIQ's.

Head to head: finding video ideas

This is the comparison that matters most, because an idea that's already been proven beats a perfectly optimized upload of the wrong idea.

vidIQ gives you Daily Ideas (AI suggestions based on your channel), Most Viewed, and an Outliers tool. Its Outliers search is good: type a keyword or upload an image, then filter by outlier score, views per hour, channel size, date, length and Shorts. On the free plan you see 6 videos per search; unlimited searches need Boost.

vidIQ Outliers feature page: find outliers and viral videos in your niche
vidIQ Outliers: search by keyword or image for videos beating their channel's baseline.

Returbe was built around outliers from day one, so it goes further in three ways:

  1. No keyword needed. Outliers are classified by niche and sub-niche, so you can browse "History & documentary, long-form, channels under 100k, last 7 days" without guessing the right search term.
  2. Small channels first. Breakout Creators and the "small channels exploding" feed surface videos with 5x, 50x, sometimes 100x more views than the channel has subscribers. That's the proof a newcomer can win in a niche, and it's invisible in a keyword search dominated by big channels.
  3. Your niche, automatically. Connect your channel and the "In my niche" tab builds a fingerprint of your videos (recurring topics, formats, thumbnails, look-alike channels) and only shows outliers that genuinely match it.

Verdict: Returbe, clearly, for idea research. vidIQ's Outliers is a solid feature inside a bigger suite; on Returbe it is the product.

Head to head: choosing a niche

vidIQ's free plan promises "niche trends worth creating around", and its AI Coach will discuss niches with you. It's helpful, but it's advice, not a dataset.

Returbe's Niche Finder lists channels and niches where small creators are breaking out, with the median views per video, the multiplier against subscribers, the estimated RPM (how much 1,000 views pay) and how crowded it is. You see actual channels, not a description of a trend.

Returbe's Niche Finder: a 1.6k-subscriber channel averaging 161k views per video (101x).

We used exactly this data to rank the 10 best YouTube niches to start in 2026, and the method step by step is in how to find a YouTube niche.

Verdict: Returbe.

Head to head: titles and packaging

vidIQ generates titles, descriptions and thumbnails with AI, and scores your packaging. If you want ten title variants in five seconds, it's great.

Returbe takes the opposite approach: Trending Formats groups titles that share the same structure across different channels ("The Most Disturbing Internet [X] Iceberg", "Why [X] Was So Hard to Catch") and shows how many channels use it and how far above their normal it performs. You copy a structure that is proven, then write your own words into it.

Returbe Trending Formats: one title structure, four channels, up to 72x their normal views.

Verdict: a tie, for different jobs. vidIQ to produce variants quickly, Returbe to know which structure is working this month.

Head to head: keywords and SEO

This one is vidIQ's. Its keyword tool, search-volume data, SEO scores and optimization checklists are mature and genuinely useful for search-driven videos. Returbe has a keyword and hashtag search with an opportunity score (demand versus competition, activity over 12 months, dominant channels), but it's a research aid, not an SEO suite.

Verdict: vidIQ.

Head to head: AI tools

vidIQ has the far bigger AI toolbox: an AI Coach with "deep thinking", a thumbnail maker, a script writer, clipping that turns long videos into Shorts (up to 11 hours on MAX), title and description generators. All of it runs on monthly AI credits (150 on Free, 2,000 on Boost, 6,000 on MAX).

Returbe's Pro plan includes AI help to write your ideas, scripts and thumbnail ideas, and an AI pass that judges which videos really match your channel. It's intentionally smaller: the data is the product, the AI helps you use it.

Both connect to AI assistants through MCP: vidIQ on every plan (using credits), Returbe on Agency+, where Claude can query outliers, niches and channels directly.

Verdict: vidIQ, if AI generation is what you're buying.

EntryBoost $19/mo ($199/yr ≈ $16.58/mo)Basic €15/mo (€150/yr = €12.50/mo)

Returbe's plans: Basic and Pro for creators, Agency and Agency+ for agencies. Paying yearly gives two months free.

Returbe is cheaper at both levels: Basic costs less than vidIQ Boost and Pro less than vidIQ MAX, and its agency plans have a public price, which matters for agencies. The real question isn't the price, it's which problem you're paying to solve. One outlier you would never have found pays for a year of either.

Who should choose vidIQ

  • You publish search-driven content (tutorials, reviews, how-tos) and keywords decide your views.
  • You want an AI assistant for every step: titles, descriptions, thumbnails, scripts, clipping.
  • You're a beginner who'd like a coach to tell you what to fix on your channel.
  • You want the cheapest paid entry into a creator suite.

Who should choose Returbe

  • You're picking or changing a niche and want proof, not opinions.
  • You keep asking "what should my next video be?" and want ideas that already worked for channels like yours.
  • You run a faceless, documentary, story or essay channel, where formats travel from channel to channel.
  • You manage several channels or a team and want competitors, folders and alerts shared in one place.

Can you use both?

Yes, and it's a strong combo, because they cover different halves of the job:

  1. Returbe: decide what to make. Open your niche in Top Videos or "In my niche", note the 3 topics and formats overperforming this month.
  2. Returbe: pick the structure. Check Trending Formats for the title structure behind those outliers.
  3. vidIQ: optimize the upload. Run the chosen topic through vidIQ's keyword research, then polish the title, description and tags.
  4. Compare the result with your own channel's median after 7 days. Above 2x, make a follow-up.

FAQ

Is Returbe a good vidIQ alternative?

Yes, if what you need is video ideas and niche research. Returbe is built around outliers: it compares every video with its own channel's median views and surfaces the ones doing 3x, 10x or 100x their normal, by niche, format and channel size. If you mostly need keyword research, tag optimization and AI writing tools, vidIQ covers more of that.

Does vidIQ have an outlier finder?

Yes. vidIQ's Outliers tool finds videos overperforming their channel's baseline from a keyword or an image search, with filters for views per hour, channel size, date and Shorts. The free plan shows up to 6 videos per search. Returbe works from a continuously updated index instead, so you can browse outliers by niche without typing a keyword.

How much do vidIQ and Returbe cost in 2026?

vidIQ has a free plan, Boost at $19/month ($199/year) and MAX at $49/month ($468/year), with AI credits on each plan. Returbe has a 7-day Pro trial, Basic at €15/month, Pro at €29/month, and for agencies Agency at €79/month and Agency+ at €149/month; paying yearly gives two months free.

Which is better for a new YouTube channel?

For choosing a niche and your first video ideas, Returbe: its Niche Finder and Top Videos show small channels (1k to 100k subscribers) that are breaking out right now, which is the best proof a newcomer can win. For optimizing titles, tags and descriptions once you publish, vidIQ's keyword and SEO tools are stronger.

Can I use vidIQ and Returbe together?

Yes, and many creators do. A common workflow: find the topic and the format with Returbe (what is overperforming in your niche this week), then use vidIQ's keyword research to pick the exact search terms and optimize the upload.

Do vidIQ and Returbe work with Claude or ChatGPT?

Both have an MCP server. vidIQ MCP is available on every plan, including Free, and uses AI credits. Returbe's Claude integration (MCP) is included in the Agency+ plan and gives your assistant access to Returbe's outliers, niches and channel data.
