YouTube niches with low competition in 2026: where small channels still break out

We analyzed 26,000 recent videos from 2,800 English channels between 1,000 and 100,000 subscribers. These are the niches where small channels most often beat their own normal by 3×, and how to spot a low-competition niche yourself.

"Low competition" is the most abused phrase in YouTube advice. Most lists are a guess: a niche looks unusual, so it must be empty. But an empty niche is often empty because nobody watches it.

So we measured competition with one question: can a small channel still break out here? Using the Returbe database, we took every long-form video published in the last 90 days by English channels between 1,000 and 100,000 subscribers, and checked how often each niche produced a 3× outlier: a video with three times the channel's normal views.

Dataset: 26,000+ videos from about 2,800 channels, October 2026.

How to read it: "Small channels" is the number of active English channels in our sample for that niche (fewer = less competition). "3× outliers" is the share of their videos that tripled the channel's normal views (higher = the algorithm rewards newcomers). "Channels < 10K subs" shows how many of the active channels are really small: when that number is high and the breakout rate too, beginners are winning.

The 5 best low-competition niches right now

1. Fitness & health: 27% breakout rate

The highest breakout rate in the dataset, with only 43 active small channels. Half of them have fewer than 10,000 subscribers. The median video is modest (2,400 views), but more than 1 video in 4 triples its channel's normal. Angles that work: specific training methods, injury recovery, fitness after 40/50, science-backed nutrition. RPM about $5.50.

2. History & documentary: high views, still open

104 channels, but 22.5% of their videos break out and the median video reaches 6,300 views, the best mix of demand and openness. 56% of active channels are under 10,000 subscribers: newcomers are clearly winning. Faceless-friendly (maps, archives, narration). RPM about $5.50.

3. Science & education: beginner-friendly

15.4% breakout rate, 53% of channels under 10K subscribers, RPM about $6.50. Explainer formats ("what happens if…", "why does…") travel well, and the topic is evergreen: videos keep getting views for years.

4. Spirituality & religion: small and loyal

Only 41 active small channels and 19% of videos breaking out. Views are lower (median 1,600), but audiences are loyal and sponsor-friendly (books, apps, courses). A good niche if you can publish consistently.

5. True crime: competitive, but worth it

155 channels is a lot, yet 17.7% still break out, and the median video gets 17,100 views, the second highest. If you can tell a story well, the demand is there. We covered why it's the best earning niche per video for small channels.

The most crowded niches for small channels

  • Gaming: 647 active small channels (5× more than most niches) and a 9.9% breakout rate. Go very specific (one game, one format) or avoid it.
  • Music: 7.9% breakout rate and a median of 900 views. The hardest niche to grow in long-form.
  • Finance & investing: the best RPM ($14), but small channels get few views (median 1,200) and only 8.7% break out. Big channels dominate search. Enter with a narrow angle (one country's taxes, one type of investor).
  • Travel & outdoors: 9.6% breakout rate, many channels, high production cost.

How to find a low-competition niche yourself

Category-level numbers are a start. The real gaps are inside niches: "history" is open, but "Roman history" might be crowded while "history of everyday objects" is wide open. Here's the method:

  1. Pick a sub-topic, not a category. "Cold-case podcasts from the 80s", not "true crime".
  2. List the channels that cover it. If you find fewer than 20 active channels, competition is low.
  3. Check their size. If several channels under 10,000 subscribers rank, the algorithm is open to newcomers.
  4. Look for outliers. Find videos with 3× or more their channel's median views. If small channels have recent outliers, there's demand they can't fully supply. (What is an outlier video?)
  5. Check the money. Compare the RPM per 1,000 views of the niche to the views you can expect.

Returbe does steps 2 to 5 automatically: the Niche Finder groups channels by sub-niche and shows breakout rates, median views and RPM, and Breakout Creators lists the small channels growing fastest this week.

Methodology

  • Source: Returbe database, English-language channels in top markets with 1,000 to 100,000 subscribers.
  • Videos: long-form only (no Shorts), published in the last 90 days, at least 7 days old.
  • Outlier: views ÷ the channel's median views on recent uploads. 3× = three times its normal.
  • Niches: Returbe's niche classifier (titles, descriptions, channel); niches with fewer than 150 videos in the sample are excluded.
  • Limits: "small channels" counts channels in our tracked sample, not every channel on YouTube. Use it to compare niches with each other, not as an absolute count.

FAQ

What YouTube niche has the least competition?

In our data, fitness and health, history and documentary, spirituality and science education have the best mix: few active small channels and a high share of breakout videos. In fitness, 27% of recent videos from small channels hit 3× their channel's normal views.

How do you measure competition on YouTube?

Count how many channels publish on the topic, and check whether small channels can still win. The best signal is the share of videos from channels under 100,000 subscribers that reach 3× their own median views. If that share is high, the algorithm is still giving new creators a chance.

Is gaming too saturated for a new channel?

Gaming has the most small channels in our data (647, five times more than most niches) and one of the lowest breakout rates (9.9%). It's not impossible, but you need a very specific angle, such as one game, one format or one type of challenge.

Is low competition the same as low demand?

Not always. Music and finance have low breakout rates for different reasons: music is crowded, and finance videos from small channels get few views (median 1,200). Look for niches where small channels have both a high breakout rate and decent median views.
