Most "trending niche" lists are written from gut feeling. We wanted the real answer, so we measured it.
Returbe records the subscriber count and total views of every channel it tracks, several times a week. We took 2,642 English-language channels with 1,000 to 1,000,000 subscribers that we tracked over 12 days on average (October 17 to November 1, 2026), measured how fast each one grew, converted it to a monthly rate, and grouped them by niche.
Short answer: sports, animals, challenges, history, DIY and comedy are growing fastest. Fitness, music, finance and beauty are almost flat. The median channel in our sample grows 1.5% a month, so anything above that is a niche with a tailwind.

- Growth / month: subscriber growth of the median channel, converted to 30 days.
- Views per subscriber / month: views the channel gained in a month divided by its subscribers. Above 10 means the channel reaches far beyond its subscribers, a sign the algorithm is pushing the niche.
- RPM: Returbe's typical estimate of what a creator earns per 1,000 long-form views in that niche (see how much YouTubers make per 1,000 views). Shorts pay much less.
What the data says
- The fastest-growing niches are Shorts niches. The top 3 (sports, animals, challenges) get 59% to 78% of their uploads from Shorts. Shorts bring subscribers fast but pay a fraction of long-form.
- Two niches grow fast and pay well: history and DIY. Both grow about 1.5x faster than average, a third of their channels grow 10%+ a month, and their RPM is in the $5.50–$6.50 range. If we had to pick a niche to start in today, it would be one of those.
- The richest niches grow the slowest. Finance ($14 RPM), business ($11) and beauty are almost flat: a lot of channels already compete for the same viewers. They're still worth it, but you need a sharper angle (see how to find an undersaturated niche).
- Fitness is the surprise of the list: 0% median growth and only 6% of channels growing fast, despite 56% Shorts.

The sub-niches growing fastest
Zooming in, with at least 20 tracked channels per sub-niche, and the share of videos from the last 60 days that hit 3x their channel's usual views (outliers):
| Sub-niche | Channels | Median growth / month | Channels growing 10%+ | Outlier rate (60 days) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| American sports (NFL, NBA…) | 24 | 8.8% | 46% | — |
| Phones & gadgets | 31 | 7.2% | 42% | 19.1% |
| Football (soccer) | 40 | 6.1% | 40% | 11.9% |
| Pets | 22 | 4.8% | 41% | — |
| Challenges | 26 | 3.9% | 31% | 13.3% |
| Streamer clips | 31 | 3.7% | 39% | 12.3% |
| Movie recaps | 21 | 3.6% | 24% | 20.9% |
| Memes | 38 | 2.9% | 42% | 10.9% |
| Roblox | 119 | 2.6% | 22% | 11.5% |
| Ancient history | 25 | 2.3% | 36% | 11.9% |
| US politics | 41 | 2.3% | 15% | 14.2% |
| Murder cases | 72 | 2.2% | 14% | 12.6% |
| War & military history | 31 | 2.2% | 29% | 14.3% |
| Police footage | 28 | 1.9% | 7% | 14.5% |
| Entrepreneurship | 29 | 1.8% | 21% | 5.9% |
| Minecraft | 261 | 1.7% | 16% | 10.2% |
| Superhero movies & franchises | 74 | 1.7% | 15% | 12.7% |
| Unsolved mysteries | 86 | 1.5% | 14% | 11.9% |
| AI tools | 149 | 1.5% | 11% | 7.9% |
And at the bottom: music covers (0.2%), cybersecurity (0.4%), horror stories (0.5%) and game lore (0.5%) barely grow.
Three sub-niches stand out because they grow fast and have a high outlier rate, meaning individual videos break out often:
- Movie recaps: 3.6% a month and 1 video in 5 is an outlier. Viewers want the story of a film in 20–40 minutes, and there's always a new film.
- Phones & gadgets: 7.2% a month and 19% outliers. Every new phone, console or gadget launch is a fresh wave of searches.
- War & military history: 2.2% a month, 14% outliers, and a history-level RPM.
AI tools, the niche everyone talks about, is in the middle: 1.5% a month and only 7.9% outliers. It's crowded, not dead.
Small channels grow faster
| Channel size | Channels | Median growth / month | Growing 10%+ / month |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1K–10K subscribers | 556 | 1.7% | 24% |
| 10K–100K subscribers | 928 | 2.4% | 25% |
| 100K–1M subscribers | 1,158 | 1.1% | 10% |
One small channel in four grows more than 10% a month. Past 100,000 subscribers, it's one in ten. In a fast-growing niche, a small channel can double in a few months; to find which ones are doing it in yours, see how to find small channels growing fast.

- SavageRounds (47.6k subscribers), MMA highlights: +28,000 a month, one Short at 20.9M views.
Notice the pattern: almost all of them are young channels (2025–2026) in niches from the top of the table, doing one very clear format again and again.
How to use this to choose a niche
- Start from what you can make for 100 videos. Growth is a tailwind, not a reason. A niche you get bored of in a month is worth nothing.
- Among the niches you could do, prefer the ones above 1.5% a month. Above-average growth means viewers are arriving faster than channels.
- Balance growth and money. Sports and memes grow fast but pay little; finance pays a lot but barely grows. History, DIY, food, science, movie recaps and phones & gadgets sit in the middle. Compare with the highest-paying YouTube niches.
- Check that small channels break out. A niche where only big channels grow is a closed niche. Look for channels under 50k subscribers with 3x+ outliers in the last 30 days (how to find outlier videos).
- Copy the format, not the channel. Note the length, title and thumbnail of the outliers. In long-form, 15 to 45 minutes works best (how long a YouTube video should be); for titles, this is what gets views.

Methodology
Returbe's index on November 2, 2026. Channels: English-language, 1,000 to 1,000,000 subscribers at the first measurement, with at least two subscriber counts 10 or more days apart between October 17 and November 1, 2026 (12 days apart on average). Excluded: terminated channels, AI-generated story channels and channels whose counts dropped by more than 10% (resets). Growth = subscriber change between the first and last count, converted to 30 days; YouTube rounds public subscriber counts, so very small channels can jump by steps. Niche = Returbe's classification of the channel. Outlier rate = share of videos published 3 to 63 days ago with 3x+ their channel's median views (sports leagues and pets have too few tracked long-form videos to show a reliable rate). RPM = Returbe's typical long-form estimate for the niche, not a measured payout. Examples were checked by hand. This is a snapshot of autumn 2026; we'll update it as we track more weeks.
FAQ
What is the fastest-growing YouTube niche right now?
Sports, and especially American sports and football (soccer). In our tracking of 2,642 English channels, the median sports channel gained 4.3% subscribers per month, almost 3 times the 1.5% average, and 36% of sports channels grew more than 10% a month. Most of that growth comes from Shorts.
Which fast-growing YouTube niche makes the most money?
History & documentary and DIY & home. Both grow about 1.5 times faster than average (2.2% a month, with nearly a third of channels growing 10%+ a month) and have an estimated RPM around $5.50 to $6.50 per 1,000 long-form views, against about $4.50 for sports and $2.60 for comedy.
Which YouTube niches are growing the slowest?
Fitness, music, personal finance and beauty. The median channel in these niches gained between 0% and 0.4% subscribers a month in our data, and fewer than 1 in 10 channels grew 10%+ a month. They pay well (finance especially) but they are crowded.
Is it easier to grow a small YouTube channel or a big one?
A small one, in percentage. Channels with 10,000 to 100,000 subscribers grew 2.4% a month at the median and a quarter of them grew 10%+ a month. Channels with 100,000 to 1 million subscribers grew 1.1% a month, and only 1 in 10 grew 10%+.
Should I pick a niche because it is growing fast?
Only if you can make content in it for a long time. A growing niche gives you a tailwind, but the niches that grow fastest are mostly Shorts-driven and pay less per view. The best picks combine growth, a decent RPM and room for small channels: history, DIY, movie recaps, phones & gadgets and true crime in our data.
